David was hardly a stranger to Betty, as owner of the Meyer Music chain—Blue Springs’ only music stores—she was quite familiar with his talents. Betty kept copies of hometown articles highlighting David’s ascent to the top, as the young man became a local obsession. The Blue Springs community also held a parade in his honor and more than 10,000 fans showed up to catch a glimpse of David during a concert held there before the finals. “Blue Springs, Missouri, is a great place to live,” adds Betty, “and a great place to be in the music business!” AS PARt OF A MuCH-PROMOtED WEEk OF “HOW tO” SESSIONS, the VieW’S WHOOPI GOLDBERG RECEIVES A GuItAR LESSON WAtCHED By MILLIONS. Learning to play guitar isn’t that hard. Just ask Whoopi Goldberg. In August, Whoopi was treated to a blues guitar lesson by multi-instrumentalist and former Bruce Springsteen guitarist Nils Lofgren. Nils had Whoopi quickly playing chords and helped to take some of the intimidation out of getting started. Apparently she was quite a quick study. Remembering Isaac Hayes Many people knew Isaac Hayes as a legendary musician, producer and entertainer. But NAMM also remembers Isaac’s important work in support of music education. In March 2004, he and Rosanna Arquette joined members of Congress and their kids in Washington, D.C., for the “Music Makes a World of Happiness” party. The inspiring event featured hands-on music making and drum decorating, as well as an instrument petting zoo. Earlier that day, Isaac attended a lunch meeting for 150 members of Congress and their staff members, where he spoke passionately about the numerous benefits of music education. Isaac, his music and his passion for music 1942–2008 making will be missed. FALL 2008 9
