The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History dubbed April Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) to draw greater public attention to the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz and its importance as an American cultural heritage. The Smithsonian operates the world’s most comprehensive set of jazz programs—it collects jazz artifacts, documents, recordings and oral histories; operates its own big band, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra; publishes books on jazz; offer fellowships for research in its collections; and offers concerts, educational workshops, master classes, lectures, seminars and symposia. Launching Jazz Appreciation Month is consistent with the Smithsonian’s 30-year-record of leadership in jazz. So why not celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month in your store? By promoting JAM, you not only educate your customers about the joys of jazz, but may also draw new people into your business who are faithful fans of this historically significant musical genre. hERE ARE 8 WAyS you CAN CElEBRATE JAzz APPRECIATIoN MoNTh IN youR ESTABlIShMENT: 1) Sponsor a local jazz concert at your store, local public school or community library. 2) Link your Web site to the Jazz Appreciation Month Web site at www.smithsonianjazz.org. 3) Collaborate with your local radio or TV station to create a special program in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month. 4) Run a special on jazz instruments. 5) Create a jazz display in your store window. 6) Teach your music students to play a jazz piece and perform it at their next recital. 7) get together with fellow musicians and organize a “Jazz Day” or “Jazz Night” in your community and have a city-wide JAM session. 8) Feature the music of different jazz legends in your business.
