Playback - Summer 2008 - (Page 26) NAMM FOUNDATION 2008 NAMM Foundation Awards In an effort to bring the gift of music making to more people, the NAMM Foundation has allocated more than $1.1 million this year to help fund 26 programs designed to increase interest and participation in making music. NAMM Foundation grants support non-profit public service organizations with innovative music education and hands-on music-making programs that reach and serve new audiences. This year’s grants benefit numerous organizations ranging from education to research. NAMM Foundation Program Grants enable the association to help support organizations that already serve music makers and students of all ages. This year’s grantees are: • American String Teachers Association • Blue Bear School of Music • Bread & roses • Coalition for Music education in Canada • Guitar and Accessories Marketing Association • Guitars in the Classroom • Levine School of Music • Little kids rock • Merit School of Music • Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation • Music for All (U.k.) • National Guild of the Community Schools of the Arts • National Piano Foundation • National String Project Consortium • New Horizons International Music Association • North Shore Boys & Girls Club • Percussion Marketing Council • rock ’N roll Camp for Girls • Technology Institute for Music educators (TI:Me) • VSA Arts • Walla Walla Symphony For more information on NAMM Foundation activities, please visit www.nammfoundation.org. Sounds of Learning: The Impact of Music education Grants examine the roles of music education in the lives of school-age children, as well as their schools and communities. This year’s grantees are: • University of Colorado—Denver • University of kansas Sounds of Living: The Impact of Music Making Grants study the role of active participation in music for children, youth, adults and seniors outside of formal educational settings. This research initiative explores the role of music making in health, wellness, socialization and other factors that contribute to wellness and quality of life. This year’s grantee is: • University of Iowa NAMM Foundation research Grants fund studies that seek to validate and support the importance of music at every stage of life. This research explores the relationship between music and physical and emotional wellness, as well as the academic benefits of music making and music education.
