Playback - Summer 2008 - (Page 31) In Memoriam… Don Johnson (1949–2008) As the editor of Musical Merchandise Review (MMR) magazine, Don Johnson made his mark in the music products industry with his passion for the people, the development of the industry and the importance of attending the trade shows. He supported NAMM’s educational outreach campaigns and the efforts to globalize the industry with the expansion of MMR overseas and the development of the industry’s first e-newsletter. Don also believed in preserving our industry’s history and sent the names of many people to include in NAMM’s Oral History program. Everyone he suggested was added to the collection, along with his own interview, completed during 2007 Summer NAMM in Austin. With a gentle and positive demeanor, Don played a major role in keeping us informed of the latest industry news and, by doing so, documented key developments and changes over the 25 years he worked for MMR. More than that, however, he became a friend to all those who care for and hope to perpetuate our industry. No Neck Ties Here… NAMM ONCE AGAIN JOINS WITh FORTUNE MAGAzINE IN SEARCh OF ThE WORLD’S BEST CORPORATE BAND. Along with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, NAMM is co-sponsoring the FORTUNE Battle of the Corporate Bands contest in an effort to help to promote music making as a fun and stress-reducing recreational activity for adults. Three regional semi-final competitions are left before the top contenders will battle it out on October 3 and 4 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The first will be held in Nashville on June 21, followed by the West Coast regional in Los Angeles on July 19; the last throw down before the finals will take place in London on August 23. The musicians in many of these bands are baby boomers who’ve dusted off their dreams and decided to rock the house again. The competition always receives a lot of media coverage and validates the benefits of making music at any age. Previous competitors have come from a variety of corporate environments, including Wells Fargo, Miller Brewing Company, NBC Universal and the American Bankruptcy Institute. The winning band will receive a variety of great prizes, including a trip to the 2009 NAMM Show in Anaheim. Get updates at www.rockhall.com/fortunebattle.
