Playback - Summer 2008 - (Page 4) THE BEAT A Note from Joe Inspiring the Public to Play One of the coolest things we get to do at NAMM is promote the image and identity of the music products industry to consumers. Recently, we launched a national campaign called “Wanna Play?” This campaign allows us to: • Promote NAMM’s ongoing and extensive music-brain research using all types of news media • Create a unified consumer message or brand for NAMM Members and the industry to sell musical instruments and products to those non-players “on the freeway”—a significant market growth opportunity • Gradually break down the “I’m not musical” syndrome—that someone has to be talented or “good” to enjoy playing music During the first week of May, the campaign took another step forward with the launch of the first “Wanna Play Music Week” (see p. 8). For this, we engaged in a number of activities, including: • National TV and radio interviews featuring Scott “The Piano Guy” Houston and me talking about why people of all ages should be playing music and why they should visit their local NAMM Member dealer to shop and take lessons. • A joint effort with the Coalition for Music Education in Canada to create the first united North American celebration of “Music Monday,” where thousands of schools, organizations and individuals played “Our Song” at the exact same time to recognize the importance of music and music education in our schools and lives (see p. 25). • A new consumer Web site, www.wannaplaymusic.com, with great research, news, fun games, celebrity testimonials and a NAMM Member dealer locator. • A YouTube contest called “Say You Wanna Play” that invites non-players to upload a short video clip of them making music or singing and then telling the world why they love to play music or want to learn how. Overall, we used this Wanna Play Music Week vehicle to push our industry’s message into millions of American households. This constant drumbeat translates to higher public awareness of music making and more products sold each year. So what is Wanna Play? It’s your new promotion for music making when you’re reaching out to non-players of all ages. I encourage all NAMM Members to call us and get creative about how you use the Wanna Play? campaign in your business. Our most recent Gallup Poll shows that of people who don’t currently play an instrument, 82 percent WISH they did. Together, we can get more people “off the freeway” and into their local community music stores so they can stop wishing and start playing. And I know we all Wanna see that happen! Overall, we used this Wanna Play Music Week vehicle to push our industry’s message into millions of American households. This constant drumbeat translates to higher public awareness of music making and more products sold each year. Sincerely, Joe Lamond NAMM President and CEO http://www.wannaplaymusic.com
