MUSIC IN THE NEWS Wanna Play Music Week a Hit! MAy 5–9 WAS DECLARED WANNA PLAy MUSIC WEEk, hELPING NAMM AND ThE INDUSTRy PUT ThE NATIONAL SPOTLIGhT ON RECREATIONAL MUSIC MAkING FOR ALL AGES. In a call to action that reached more than 100 million people across the country, NAMM invited non-musicians to make music … just for the fun of it. Wanna Play Music Week generated significant national and regional media coverage. The week’s celebration kicked off with a satellite media tour featuring NAMM President Joe Lamond and Scott Houston, PBS’ “The Piano Guy.” Speaking on behalf of the Wanna Play? campaign to more than 15 news markets around the nation, Lamond’s interviews highlighted the fun of making music as a hobby—and the latest scientific research validating its benefits for people of all ages. Viewers were invited to visit www.wannaplaymusic.com to learn more, find out how to get started and read testimonials/success stories. Another feature of the weeklong campaign was the focus on a different theme every day in the media and on the Wanna Play Music Web site. Monday: Music Monday Tuesday: Music for Moms and Dads Wednesday: Music as Therapy Thursday: Bridging the Digital Gap Friday: Heroes Behind the Music NAMM also launched a contest for aspiring musicians on the new YouTube.com Wanna Play Music channel. The “Say You Wanna Play?” contest is open to people who want to play an instrument but don’t think they have musical talent. While attracting submissions, the channel also builds a community that celebrates recreational music making and inspires people to play. The winner will receive a private music lesson with a celebrity and a trip to the 2009 NAMM Show.
