Playback - Summer 2008 - (Page 9) MUSIC IN THE NEWS Young @ Heart This entertaining documentary by Stephen Walker focuses on the world’s oldest cover band—not the one that has been around the longest, but the one with the oldest members! The senior citizens in this New England chorus could give their grandkids a run for their money as they perform songs by Jimi Hendrix, The Clash, Coldplay, Sonic Youth and more. This is a moving testimony to the joy and fulfillment music brings to people of all ages. Finding the Groove 60 Minutes: El Sistema The April 13 segment of 60 Minutes reprised a powerful report on El Sistema, a music program in Venezuela that is about reaching underprivileged children through music. “The System” was founded in 1975 by Dr. José Antonio Abreu, who believed that teaching children to play music—classical music—could change the course of their lives. Over the past 33 years, more than 800,000 children have participated in the Venezuelan National Youth Orchestra. To view the story, click the 60 Minutes link at www.cbsnews.com and search El Sistema. Finding the Groove is a new series of live multimedia concerts and online social networking opportunities that celebrates kids and their love of music. Created by Leslie Stifelman, executive producer of the Peabody Award–winning HBO documentary series The Music in Me, events will include musical performances and stories of children from diverse cultural backgrounds throughout the country, showing how learning music plays an integral role in shaping young lives. Premiering this fall, Finding the Groove is a statewide initiative in Indiana in partnership with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and Music for All. Talented instrumental musicians, composers, singer-songwriters and vocalists ages 7 through 12 are invited to upload videos of their performances to the Web site. A few of the most talented entrants will then have the chance to perform live onstage with the Indianapolis Symphony and Indiana University Philharmonic orchestras. So it was no wonder when the magazine put Chris Martin’s 3-year-old daughter Claire Francis on the cover of its April 2008 issue. C.F. Martin and Company was one of four businesses profiled for the magazine’s lead story, “The Success Gene,” focusing on why some family companies thrive year after year.
