WEEk FEATURING A NATIoNAl MEDIA ToUR AND EXCITING RETAIlER oPT-INS. Thanks to today’s abundance of musical reality shows, ads featuring people playing instruments and rock band-related video games, music making has become a media darling. Now, NAMM is going to “turn it up to 11” as the association embarks on the second round of Wanna Play? promotions and events. During the third week of March, NAMM will launch National Wanna Play Music? Week with a satellite media tour, in-store promotions and the opportunity for dealers to generate news coverage in their own markets. The campaign will target people of every age and demographic. This promotion is an extension of NAMM’s effort to inspire the 82 percent of Americans who wished they could play music to take that next step into active music making. Marching Band Honored on Ellen In October, the TV show Ellen featured the inspiring story of the Ballou High School Marching Band. The subject of a new documentary, the Washington, D.C., band is made up of primarily at-risk inner city kids. Despite the area’s 50 percent dropout rate, all of the band’s 14 seniors took home diplomas last year. Knowing that students were repairing their instruments with duct tape, show host Ellen DeGeneres presented Ballou’s band director with checks totaling $100,000 to help the school and its accomplished music program. Moog Foundation Moving Forward Ever since the Moog Foundation for Electronic Music joined the Friends of NAMM kiosk at last year’s show in Anaheim, things have moved quickly for this non-profit organization, including being approached to do a yearlong traveling exhibit of Bob Moog’s theramins; having Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins lend his name to the cause; launching a successful online campaign to help preserve the archives of the late synthesizer pioneer; and hosting the foundation’s first fundraiser.
