In October, the Disney Channel began airing a series of five-minute segments each Saturday at 7:55 p.m., leading up to the debut of a new half-hour documusical, High School Musical: The Music in You. The story follows a student theater company in Fort Worth, Texas, as they experience the positive effect the arts can have in their lives. Produced in association with the NAMM Foundation, the program premieres Sunday, January 20 (8 p.m., ET/PT) on the Disney Channel, with the short-form series located on www.DisneyChannel.com and on Sprint TV. The NAMM Foundation also teamed with the Disney Channel to launch Disney’s High School Musical School Grant Program, allowing schools to apply for grants that cover licensing costs associated with producing their own stage show, and provide a cash allotment to help support additional teaching, pro-audio and production costs. More information on the grant program and a downloadable activity guide are available at www.DisneyChannel.com/MusicInYou. NAMM’s Message Heard Around the World The association’s Tournament of Roses Parade® float took on a global flair as an international family of Sesame Street characters joyfully played instruments before an enthusiastic audience. NAMM reached millions of viewers on New Year’s Day with its pro-music-making message when broadcasters from nine cable and TV networks around the world described the industry’s float appearance in the 119th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif. “NAMM’s float is designed to send the message that making music is an important component to every child’s overall growth and development, and is equally important for people of all ages and cultures as a wonderful form of expression and creativity,” says NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond. This was NAMM’s fifth year as a float sponsor in the Tournament of Roses Parade. Industry Reaches Out to Help Save the Music At a recent benefit, VH1 Save the Music honored NAMM and the music products industry for their music education advocacy efforts. During the benefit, several instruments were donated to Save the Music by NAMM Member companies, including a Rickenbacker guitar signed by Tom Petty, which garnered $6,000 in a silent auction. The benefit raised more than $2 million to restore school music programs across the country. WINTER 2008 13 http://www.DisneyChannel.com http://www.DisneyChannel.com/MusicInYou
