Playback - Winter 2008 - (Page 25) NAMM FOUNDATION Getting to Know the NAMM Foundation lAUNChED IN 2006, ThE NAMM FoUNDATIoN WoRkS To INCREASE ACTIVE PARTICIPATIoN IN MUSIC MAkING ACRoSS ThE lIFESPAN BY SUPPoRTING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCh, PhIlANThRoPIC GIVING AND PUBlIC SERVICE PRoGRAMS. While NAMM once managed a number of market-building and separate non-profit organizations—including the International Foundation for Music Research, the American Music Conference and the Museum of Making Music—these programs have been consolidated under the NAMM Foundation umbrella. Funded by association activities, such as the trade shows, as well as outside donations, the Foundation provides funding in outreach and support for music advocacy programs and activities, including funding partnerships, offering financial grants and supporting scientific studies. NAMM FoUNDATIoN PhIlANThRoPY AND GRANTS Program Grants NAMM offers grants to non-profit public service organizations with innovative music education and hands-on music-making programs that reach and serve new audiences. Partnership Grants NAMM Foundation’s mission aligned with a number of other organizations and corporations to reach and serve music education and music makers of all ages. By partnering with these programs, the Foundation maximizes the impact of available funds and reaches critical audiences with information about the benefits of making music. research Grants The research the Foundation has funded helps to validate and support the importance of music at every stage of life and explore the relationship between music and physical and emotional wellness, as well as the academic benefits of music making and music education. The grants include Sounds of Learning: The Impact of Music Education Grants; Sounds of Living: The Impact of Music Making Grants; and scientific grants. PUBlIC oUTREACh PRoGRAMS Best Communities for Music Education in America Last year NAMM announced the winners of the eighth annual poll honoring the most music-friendly towns in America, including Las Vegas, Nev.; Newport News, Pa.; and Rochester, N.Y. Communities ranking high in the survey receive both local and national media recognition and validate to the public the value of music programs in our schools. SupportMusic.com To help people become music advocates in their own districts, NAMM and MENC: The National Association for Music Education created www.supportmusic.com to provide parents, educators and community leaders with valuable resources and tools. Since its inception, more than 150 companies and organizations nationwide have joined in to help ensure that music remains an integral part of education for all children. Museum of Making Music Housed in Carlsbad, Calif., the museum celebrates the past century of industry innovations and achievements. Welcoming over 25,000 visitors annually, the museum displays more than 500 instruments and products and explores the industry’s history through multimedia clips, special exhibitions, performances and workshops.
