Improve Your Web Site If you’re not online yet—or if your company Web site looks tired, confusing or just plain sad—it’s time to allocate a little energy to your online presence. It’s the calling card of a successful and profitable business. “2008 is the year to improve your Web site,” says Kevin Mitchell, MMR magazine Web site columnist and Web consultant. “It’s certainly not expensive, but it’s critical.” More than 70 percent of brick-and-mortar customers browse online before buying products locally. “I tell my clients that your Web site is your new front door,” Mitchell says. “A common misconception is ‘I’m not selling online, so why do I need a Web site?’ You just can’t avoid it anymore.” Advertising in the phone book is passé; if customers can’t find you online, in their eyes, you don’t exist. But there’s no need to feel overwhelmed. Your company Web site doesn’t have to be flashy or have e-commerce capabilities. “It doesn’t need to be that complicated,” Mitchell says. A good site could be as simple as a single page showcasing a company logo, your store’s products and services, business hours, phone and fax Cost shouldn’t be an issue. Talk to local design companies or independent contractors who can build a basic site for $1,000 or $2,000. If you’re lucky enough to have Web-savvy employees, ask them to help design a site.
