Playback - Winter 2009 - (Page 15) Music Industry Raises Concern over Wireless Microphone Interference THE qUALITY OF LIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCES COULD BE COMPROMISED NOW THAT THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC) HAS OPENED WIRELESS FREqUENCIES TO COMPANIES LIKE GOOGLE, MICROSOFT, DELL AND MOTOROLA. Enacted Nov. 4, the new rule allows these technology companies to produce new broadband devices that operate in the same radio frequency (RF) spectrum used by professional audio and communications equipment. NAMM worked with a coalition of companies, organizations and individuals, including Shure, the National Association of Broadcasters and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), who opposed the legislation arguing that wireless product users would face interference when performing live at shows held in schools, churches, arts centers, bars and outdoor arenas. The National Association of Broadcasters campaigned against the white-spaces proposal, saying two rounds of testing by the FCC failed to prove that prototype broadband devices would avoid interfering with TV stations on neighboring channels. Sen. Clinton, Dolly Parton, Guns N Roses, the Country Music Association, the American Music Association and The Recording Academy are some of the individuals and organizations expressing concern about the issue. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, who advocated for the white-spaces proposal, said the rule would allow for new technology, including enhanced home broadband networks and new Internet-based products for consumers. NAMM will continue to monitor this issue and report back to the Membership and music products consumers.
