Playback - Winter 2009 - (Page 22) INTERNATIONAL The International Coalition Comes Together to Create More Music Makers AFTER A YEAR OF COOPERATIVE EFFORTS TO SHARE IDEAS FOR INCREASING THE PUBLIC’S DESIRE TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN MUSIC MAKING, THE INTERNATIONAL COALITION WILL MEET AGAIN IN jANUARY AT THE 2009 NAMM SHOW TO DISCUSS NEW IDEAS FOR GROWING THE GLOBAL MARKET AND TO PLEDGE THEIR SUPPORT TO WORKING EVEN MORE CLOSELY TOGETHER IN THE FUTURE. The International Coalition now includes nearly 40 association and company leaders representing more than 20 countries and regions around the world. An example of how effective sharing ideas can be is the Coalition for Music Education in Canada’s Music Monday, which initiated a model of market development on a large scale. In 2008, Canada’s fourth annual Music Monday was held gathering hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, parents, professional and community musicians and music organizations for a nationwide simultaneous concert by performing the same song at the exact same time. Following the Canadian model closely, in 2007 Australia adopted a Music Monday program of its own, called “Music. Count us in.” and held its second one in October 2008 with great success. This year’s event in Australia is set to be an even bigger affair. These experiences led to plans for a week of activities throughout the United States in 2008, including a “Music Monday” and a week of themed events, all publicizing different sectors of active music making. This year’s Music Monday in the U.S. and Canada takes place May 4. The International Coalition intends to build on ideas such as these at the upcoming meeting. The agenda will focus on sharing market development concepts and public relations initiatives are just a few examples of how the industry can unite to grow markets around the world benefiting the entire music products community.
