Encourage him or her to apply for the Gard Scholarship. Named after former NAMM Executive Vice President William R. Gard, the Gard Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time student at an accredited four-year university who works at least 400 hours a year for a NAMM Member company. The $2,000 scholarship is designed to invest in the education of promising students interested in contributing their talents to the music products industry and to help provide NAMM Members with well-trained job applicants. The Gard Scholarship grant is renewable for up to three academic years. The application deadline is March 31, 2009. For more details and eligibility requirements, please contact NAMM at 800-767-6266. The Sounds of Healing When Hurricane Katrina swept through New Orleans, it took with it one of Sylvia Palmer’s most treasured possessions: her brand-new baby grand piano. “All my life I wanted a baby grand and I finally got it Christmas of 2004,” says Sylvia, a music teacher since age 15. “It was the biggest thing I ever purchased for my home.” Then eight months later—after Sylvia made the final payment on the piano—the hurricane struck. “When I came home, everything was turned upside down,” she recalls. “It was heartbreaking.” Sylvia relocated to Mississippi temporarily. A local retailer offered her teaching space in their studio, and she was able to buy a weighted keyboard with a grant from the GRAMMY Foundation. Still, Sylvia desperately missed her baby grand piano. Hearing Sylvia’s story and seeing pictures of her devastated piano, the folks at Pearl River were moved to help. “When the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund contacted us, we knew we had to replace her baby grand piano,” says Pearl River U.S. President Jennette Xu. “It was our pleasure to help Sylvia return to teaching and bringing the love of music to her students.” When I came home, everything was turned upside down. It was heartbreaking. SUMMER 2009 31 WINTER 2008
