Precast Inc. - March/April 2008 - (Page 71) with custom designs for retaining walls, sound barriers and bridges across the country, CFL now has a product that takes current conventional thinking of precasting color in concrete and adds a completely different approach. FōTERA is in a class of its own when used outdoors, even though it has dramatic indoor applications as well. CFL can transform any design, text, portrait or symbol, at any scale, into a stunning wall or floor mural or sidewalk/plaza promenade that is 100 percent solid, reinforced, structural concrete. Virtually maintenance free, FōTERA lasts for generations and beyond. FōTERA was first installed in a 50by-30-foot courtyard for an elementary school in 1988. Now FōTERA has been used in several monumental projects across the country. The D.C. Commission of the Arts and Humanities commissioned CFL for an eight-panel centerpiece water feature mural depicting portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith and Rosa Parks – all former patrons of the old H Street Community in northwest Washington, D.C. The overall dimensions of this mural are 6 feet by 30 feet. Another dynamic project was installed last year in the outdoor plaza of the new College of Medicine at Florida State University. Three FōTERA wall murals, each measuring 7.5 feet by 8.5 feet, display full-color images of Hippocrates, known as the Father of Medicine; Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical doctor’s degree; and John Gorrie, the famous Floridian inventor and doctor best known for the discovery of refrigeration for hospital air conditioning. Using this revolutionary colored concrete process, CFL also fabricated and installed 30 oval FōTERA murals measuring 4 feet by 6 feet into two miles of sidewalk connecting the Largo Town Center and Morgan Boulevard Metro Stations in Prince George’s County, Md. As commuters move between the stations and to their places of business or residence, they read the passages and view the colorful mosaics and FōTERA icons. These oval icons were designed by Weitzman’s sister company, Creative Design Resolutions. Each FōTERA icon represents an iconographic symbol, important place or notable historic figure from Maryland. Brick pavers engraved with poetry, quotations and factual references spiral out from each icon. Two mosaic walls, one that highlights the local historical figure Garrett Morgan and one that includes a 20-foot compass rosette mosaic in front of it, complete the design. As a successful artist in figurative sculpture and large-scale public art, Weitzman brings an artistic sensibility to every FōTERA project. His color palette is restricted only by his imagination. Evocative of Georges Seurat and his scientific innovations in pointillism, Weitzman specially formulates his color palette for each project. The tiny stone fragments and the background color matrix combine to create complex color fields composed of tiny dots of color that transcend the traditional painter’s palette. Currently the final pieces of what will be the largest outdoor concrete pedestrian mural of its kind in the world are being fabricated to be installed at the $2 billion National Harbor Development on the Potomac River in Maryland across from Washington, D.C. This 1,600-squarefoot belvedere balcony will overlook the harbor and J. Stewart Johnson’s famous 70-foot sculpture “The Awakening” from its center-stage position next to the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. The unveiling of this piece was scheduled for April 2008. For more information, contact James J.
