Precast Inc. - July/August 2008 - (Page 67) Henry Schmidgall, who started the business in 1917, had all the kids unload cement cars during the weekends and cast riser rings and manhole block during the winters in the basement of their concrete home in Hancock. Gene remembers digging pipe in by hand, rolling them into the ditch, unloading drain tile by hand as well as casting them on their machine in the original plant in downtown Hancock. Gene worked his way up from digging ditches to running cranes, installing pipe and dispatching trucks to job sites. He then moved to administrative duties, including vice president, president and finally chief executive officer. His various positions in the company allowed him to work in North Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Arizona, Missouri, Washington, D.C., and Switzerland. As the last of the second generation, Gene was hard-pressed to let go, but at age 76 figured it was time to hand total control over to the third generation. His sons and nephews will continue to manage Hancock Concrete’s eight locations throughout Minnesota, Iowa and North Dakota. Gene and his wife, Dorothy, live in Hancock, where they have been together for 60 years. For more information about Hancock Concrete, visit www.hancockconcrete.com.
