Precast Inc. - September/October 2008 - (Page 50) Crane Safety Due to the size and weight of the product being manipulated in a precast plant the operation of the crane creates some specific hazards that should be taken into consideration at all times. There are many safety rules and regulations to be followed during the operation of an overhead crane, and these should be reviewed in depth during the training process. The following are just some of the basic safety rules to consider during crane operation: • Do not operate a crane if you are not trained and authorized to do so. • Inspect the crane before using it. • Do not operate a crane in need of repairs. • Do not pass the load over other employees. • Do not operate the crane until you have read and understood the manufacturer’s operating manuals. • Do not lift more than the rated load for the crane. • Do not use a crane with twisted, kinked, damaged or worn wire rope. • Do not leave the load supported by the crane unattended. • Do not operate a crane unless all persons are and remain clear of the supported load. • Do not allow any employee to ride on the hook, the load or the concrete bucket. • Do not lift a load until all slings are securely in place and centered with the load. • Make sure the load will clear all obstructions. • Warn other employees of an approaching load. • Travel with the load as close to the floor as possible. • Always plan for a route of escape.
