Precast Inc. - September/October 2008 - (Page 61) BOOTH 540 THE PRECAST SHOW came in less expensive. “This incredible new hollowcore flooring system will revolutionize residential housing construction,” said Bloom. “Other builders in this area are coming by the project asking how I was able to get the high ceilings. This project is getting lots of high praises from other builders.” With the use of the hollowcore flooring system, the builder was able to achieve clear spans of 28 to 30 feet and add up to 8 inches more to the ceiling heights throughout the house without the use of columns or steel beams. This means that there will be enough space to have a pool table in the basement – or even an indoor swimming pool. In addition to column-free space and higher ceilings, Bloom also wanted marble and terrazzo floors throughout, which would not have been possible with a wood sub-floor system due to inevitable cracking. By using the hollowcore system with a 2-inch concrete topping, radiant heating was installed into the poured topping to warm the floors throughout the house. No more cold feet. And the marble and terrazzo floors won’t be subject to cracking. “When people are spending over $1 million on a new home,” says Bloom, “they don’t want 8-foot ceilings, and from what I was fortunate enough to discover, the only way to get more ceiling height (up to 9 feet high) with clear spans and terrazzo and marble floors is by using the hollowcore concrete flooring system.” The 85-year-old Nitterhouse Concrete Products Inc. is a member of the National Precast Concrete Association.
