Precast foundations approved by international building code congress BOOTH 540 THE PRECAST SHOW Following months of revisions to the NPCA-proposed International Residential Codes (Building) RB104, RB105, RB106 and RB108, three of four proposed International Residential Codes (Building) were accepted into the 2009 International Residential Code at the ICC Final Action Hearings in Minneapolis Sept. 17-23. The additions that were approved and accepted into the 2009 International Residential Codes (Building) were: RB104 – Provides a simple definition of a Precast Concrete Foundation Wall RB105 – Outlines design requirements for precast concrete foundation walls and identifies them with a label issued by an approved agency RB106 – Outlines the design and installation requirements of precast concrete foundations RB108, which includes dampproofing language, was the only submitted proposal that did not gain approval. The committee is currently revising the public comment and will resubmit it at the next ICC Hearings. How these codes affect the precast concrete foundation wall industry is best described by Michael Kistner, the NPCA Foundations Subcommittee chairman. “Having an international code behind the precast foundation concept adds tremendous legitimacy to our product against the other options,” said Kistner. “It affords our industry the ability to walk into any project and quote any job on par and from a position of strength with a national code behind you, not weakness as it sometimes feels without such approval in hand.” Helderman added that these additions to the International Residential Code will strongly entrench precast concrete foundation walls into the code as a mainstream product. The acceptance of the international code additions were recognized as a breakthrough for the precast concrete foundation wall industry and adds validity to precast concrete foundation walls when competing with alternative products. 70 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008 | PRECAST INC. http://www.cresset.com http://www.cresset.com
