This sequence allowed the project to pick a good weather window and accomplish the project. The fast-track project was completed in 10 weeks. Four weeks were involved in design and submittals, five The challenge: To install a large bridge abutment in five days. The answer: Precast concrete from Garden State Precast. The Target Retail Abutment Project was constructed in November 2007. The two abutments were segmental match cast in three 70-ton sections. All six of the post-tensioned sections displayed a footprint of 9.5 feet by 20 feet and overall height of 10.5 feet. The nine wingwall segments displayed a smaller footprint of approximately 7 feet by 18 feet and overall heights of 7 feet to 14 feet. Due to the long reach required, a 650-ton mobile crane was used to set the pieces. The abutments and wingwalls were installed in two working days. One day was spent installing on each side of the stream. During the third day, seams and joints were grouted to allow for post-tensioning on the fourth day. The fifth and final day was spent preparing the abutment seats for precast weeks of production, and the final week for shipping and installation. This fast pace allowed the final bridge deck to be completed and in use during December 2007. Other project benefits were realized during the project, including a decrease in stream bypass pumping; a more effective utilization of site manpower; a highquality product manufactured in a controlled environment; elimination of costly sheeting and shoring; and minimization of weather as a site factor.
