Precast Solutions - July/August 2008 - (Page 26) THE PRECAST ADVANTAGE Precast concrete offers the following advantages over wind towers built with alternative materials: 1. Inherently durable 2. Design flexibility for taller, more efficient wind towers and for variable section diameter and thickness 3. Factory-controlled material quality and production efficiencies 4. Rapid on-site erection and minimal site disruption 5. Towers with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcing would weigh about half that of a steel-reinforced precast concrete tower 6. Higher damping properties relative to other materials for less operating noise, vibration and rotor fatigue 7. Long service life and low maintenance 8. Use of local labor and materials in production and erection 9. Resistance to corrosion becomes critical for coastal and offshore wind farms 10. Environmental benefits in recycled components, reusability and lower air-pollutant emissions Illustration courtesy of The Concrete Centre, England 26 PRECAST SOLUTIONS | JULY/AUGUST 2008
