Georgia County Government - January 2009 - (Page 38) Oconee County Commission Chairman Melvin Davis along with 4-H members and the Oconee County Extension Staff unveil a proclamation for the observation of National 4-H week in October. EXTENSION continued from page 37 Standards. Students from fi ft h- through twelft h-grades participate in handson learning through curricula in Agriscience and Healthy Lifestyles, training in Garden Earth Naturalist, mastery in public speaking and language arts, and opportunities for citizenship and service-learning. Wanda Barrs, Chair of the Georgia state Board of Education, sees Georgia 4-H as a key partner in assisting schools in their mission. “Graduating students prepared for work or college is job one for Georgia. Quality 4-H programs can be a major lever in ensuring that more of our students graduate with superior skills for the workforce and college. We value this partnership.” Family and Consumer Sciences Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Extension programs place research-based information for many facets of life at the fingertips of Georgia citizens. County FACS agents assist Georgians with a wide body of research-based knowledge about topics that affect their daily lives: family, food and home. Extension FACS agents are the local experts in food safety, proper eating habits, child safety and parenting. With programming options which range from nutrition education to living with chronic disease, from “Better Brains for Babies” to caring for dependent seniors, from financial literacy to estate planning, every Georgia citizen can improve her/his quality of life through participation in FACS programming. In Athens-Clarke County, almost 20 percent of the population is estimated to be living below the poverty level. The local county Extension office, especially through its Expanded Foods and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), targets several of its programs to benefit this group.
