Georgia County Government - February 2008 - (Page 27) economy picks up again, the region will be among the first to benefit, again calling on local officials here to try to find ways to preserve the exceptional rural character the communities still have. Habersham County is now updating its comprehensive plan to “design” where the growth will land. In the county’s 300-square-mile area, there are seven cities. “We’ve been aggressive meeting with all our cities to discuss growth issues, and this has been quite beneficial,” Butterworth asserts. “So far, it has been an informal battery of meetings, which has worked for us. We will continue this trend.” In step with the Regional Development Center’s meetings with all counties and cities within the region, individual coordinated growth planning should help communities get substantial strategic goals set, espouse all officials in the region. The issue of balancing pronounced growth and resources like water is likely to remain a double-edged sword, especially as drought persists. However, with the in-place working relationships between the counties in this region going so well, the dual benefits of both jurisdictional and regional strategic planning and the ongoing protections afforded by large expanses of federally protected lands, growth is likely to remain predictable here – at least more so than in the more chaotic growth corridors of the metro region.
