Georgia County Government - February 2008 - (Page 30) HOLCOMB continued from page 29 approach to education and outreach on environmental issues. Water conservation was the first focus for the Education Roundtable, which developed resources for homeowners, teachers, facility managers and the media aimed at reducing outdoor water use though a program called waterSmart (visit www.ConserveWaterGeorgia.net for more information). From Holcomb’s perspective, the next item on his list of projects is to reconnect people with the outdoors, especially children. In addition to Outdoor Adventure Days that was started in 2000 by Holcomb while serving as a Game Management Regional Supervisor in Northwest Georgia, initiatives such as Go Fish Georgia and the State Parks and Historic Sites Division’s GO Outdoors Campaign will do just that. Go Fish Georgia will improve the quality of fishing and fishing access throughout the state. The cornerstone of this fishing initiative will be the Go Fish Georgia Visitors Center and Hatchery which will serve as a one-stop destination to learn how to and where to fish in Georgia, capitalizing on a recreational pursuit that already accounts for more than a $1.5 billion annual economic impact in the state. Governor Perdue announced the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry as the site of this new facility, which is scheduled to open in late 2009. The GO Outdoors Campaign builds upon recommendations developed through the State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan and encourages family-friendly recreation in a safe environment at Georgia State Parks. The campaign positions outdoor recreation as a way to improve health and fitness and to spend quality family time. “I’m extremely proud of what the DNR team has accomplished,” Holcomb said. “You won’t find a more committed staff in all of state government, and we take the governor’s goals of having the best managed state of providing the highest level of customer service very seriously.” Holcomb’s career with DNR spans 29 years, beginning as a wildlife tech- nician at Ossabaw Island in 1978. He also served as manager of Ossabaw, along with being a wildlife technician supervisor in northeast Georgia, a senior wildlife biologist and manager of Sapelo Island, and a game management supervisor in northwest Georgia. Holcomb was named as assistant director of Wildlife Resources Division in 2001 and director in 2003. He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from West Georgia College. The Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) certify him as a deputy conservation ranger. Holcomb is a member of the Wildlife Society and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources Advisory Committee’s Instruction and Outreach Committee. He is also chairman of the Coastal Marshlands and Shore Protection Committees and serves on the Land Conservation Council and the Stone Mountain Memorial Association. Holcomb is a resident of Plainville, where he lives with his wife, Terri, and son, Zane. ■ Ernest T.
