Georgia County Government - February 2008 - (Page 8) PRESIDENT continued from page 7 throughout Georgia, in rural and urban communities. The current state of the health care system in Georgia cannot be sustained, and Medicaid funding shortfalls exacerbate the problem in all communities. Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) acknowledges that access to health care depends on the level of service provided, as well as the geographical location of available services. The viability of hospitals and doctors in any community is related intimately to those communities’ economic vitality. Counties currently support a host of resources such as hospitals, health departments and emergency services in the form of subsidies. Without the partnership of the state and federal governments for programs like Medicaid, county governments cannot do their part to sustain or improve health care for local citizens. Right now we have a chance to support access to necessary health care for all Georgians by supporting the ACCESS Healthcare Coalition, and ACCG has qPublic.net Your On-Line Data & GIS Experts Georgia’s Leading Provider qPublic provides websites for Georgia Tax Commissioners & Assessors. ACCG is proud to be a member of this coalition, which asks for adequate compensation for all providers in the health care industry and aims to insure access to health care for all Georgians. ACCG specifically supports the Georgia Department of Community Health’s proposed budget recommendations, which would increase Medicaid funding. The association also supports full reimbursement for the cost of emergency medical services. In expressing support for the ACCESS Healthcare Coalition, ACCG asked that Medicaid reforms and their impacts be carefully considered. The Medicaid program supports citizens especially in need of health care services, including the uninsured and the underinsured. We also recognize that investment in the health care of these populations can be directly related to health care savings over the long term, as well as other social costs. In closing, it is impossible to have a consistently high quality of life without access to adequate medical care, and this applies to every Georgia community. In supporting the ACCESS Healthcare Coalition, Georgia’s county commissioners acknowledge not only the vital importance of these fundamental services for the well-being of all Georgia citizens, but also for the economic health of communities and regions, and their ability to sustain growing numbers of residents. You are urged to contact your legislators today to express your support of the ACCESS Healthcare Coalition, as well as the Department of Community Health’s budget recommendations to boost Medicaid. The health of every community in our state could depend on it. ■ 2008 ACCG Annual Meeting Make Your Plans Now to Attend! qPublic –GET HOOKED TODAY!
