Georgia County Government - February 2009 - (Page 6) PRESIDENT continued from page 5 The training programs are also accessible – with a full slate of courses offered as a prelude to every ACCG meeting, and supplemented with periodic sessions between meetings. The networking available to commissioners and their elected or appointed staff during all training sessions is equally valuable. By taking advantage of the unique networking opportunities afforded by training, I personally have been made acutely aware that while all Georgia counties In-depth courses cover topics such as managing growth, fiscal fitness, strategic planning, quality growth and quality-of-life issues, environmental concerns, effective negotiating and much more. are diverse to the point that no two are alike, all 159 jurisdictions have similar challenges. Many find solutions to issues by talking with and listening to other attending commissioners. We learn not only from our instructors, but also from each other. As always, listening is a vital skill for any elected official. I believe it is imperative to listen to the people you represent and be responsive to their needs, then proceed to do what’s best for the greater good of the county. This guiding principle has been driven home to me time and again throughout my experience in the ACCG Training Programs. As of 2006, I had completed all the training programs up through the truly unique and profoundly informative Certified Commissioners’ Advanced Program, also known as CCAP. Of no other accomplishment am I more proud than my training credentials through ACCG. There truly is something for every official, and every jurisdiction. In-depth courses cover topics such as managing growth, fiscal fitness, strategic planning, quality growth and quality-of-life issues, environmental concerns, effective negotiating and much, much more. All these resources are at your disposal uniquely through the ACCG Training Programs. As you grow in your training career, you will fi nd that personally and professionally, you are enriched beyond measure. Your perspectives will broaden, you will become the best leader you can be, and your public is sure to notice, and benefit. In closing, I urge all my fellow officials to challenge themselves by taking full advantage of these exceptional training programs; go beyond what is required, and you and your public will benefit immensely. It’s truly a once-in-alifetime opportunity. ■ 6 GEORGIA COUNTY 399759_Mauldin.indd 1 GOVERNMENT 9/11/08 9:40:29 AM http://www.mjcpa.com
