Georgia County Government - March 2008 - (Page 10) The current economic downturn focuses more attention on the potential recklessness of joining the herd and rushing into unknown territory without careful analysis. MATTERS continued from page 9 ment, with a population expected to increase by more than 2 million in the next decade, shrinking the size of government is not only difficult, it can provoke unexpected problems. What is possible, however, is a continuing eval- uation of how we provide services to identify where efficiencies and changes may result in less cost. Taxes may be disliked, but lack of adequate transportation, unavailability of public facilities, inadequate public safety and poorly performing schools are more important considerations, as are the needs of business and industry that drive Georgia’s economic base. In closing, some great ideas may sound good in theory, but prove disastrous put into practice without comprehensive consideration and evaluation. Not jumping on the bandwagon is sometimes the best move for the welfare of the whole state. ■ 347176_McCall.indd 1 9/27/07 1:16:51 PM 10 GEORGIA COUNTY 365418_StreetSmarts.indd 1 GOVERNMENT 1/15/08 10:28:53 AM 353044_G_Ben.indd 1 11/6/07 4:44:42 PM http://www.mccallinc.com
