It’s 76 degrees Fahrenheit, the humidity is a comfortable 59 percent, and snowy egrets dot the landscape as they hover from the nearby marshes. These common shorebirds are abundant in coastal Georgia, but to those just passing through, they lend the most exotic of touches to public rights-of-way, on their way to and from the open stretches of saltmarsh, or Ossabaw, the barrier island Bryan County deeded to Chatham County decades ago in a service delivery negotiation. So it is with the entire 90-mile stretch of Georgia’s still-pristine coast – the stark beauty of the region is somewhat taken for granted by those who live here, but strikes those passing through afresh every time they are lucky enough to visit. No matter how popular the Georgia coast has now become, its wild barrier islands, moss-laden live oaks and semi-tropical avian wildlife imbue a lushness that permeates everything, and upon which development has not yet over-encroached.
