Senior citizens have access to a Senior Citizens Center, for those 60 and older to meet and socialize, enjoy hot meals and expand opportunities for experience. provides alternatives to incarceration for young offenders. Created under the auspices of Bryan County Family Connection in 2002, it is overseen by Family Connection Director Jennings and funded by Georgia Children and Youth Coordinating Council grants. Data shows that young people who have completed the program have shown a marked improvement in their perception of family and community support, and their attitude toward drug use, than non-participants. camping, hiking, fishing and picnicking amid a vista of marshes and giant live oaks. Bryan County recreation facilities offer residents a great complement to the surrounding natural amenities – Bryan has two major recreation facilities in Richmond Hill offering multiple ball fields, indoor basketball courts and tennis courts. Pembroke has one, offering the same amenities and a new SPLOST V-funded facility is planned. Public boat ramps, playgrounds and a fishing pier are also available. Recognized Youth Programs The Family Connection is a vital service here, and offers a Children’s Fund, family counseling, drug free programs, juvenile diversion programs and programs targeting the special needs of teens. A very popular 4-H program is operated by the Bryan County Cooperative Extension service through the University of Georgia. Bryan County’s Juvenile Diversion Prog ra m wa s recog n i z ed w it h a County Excellence Award in 2006 by Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) and Georgia Trend magazine, the first year of the awards program. The cooperative effort with local law enforcement agencies, Juvenile Justice, school of f icia ls, resource officers and mental health professionals Recreation, Historic Sites I n add it ion to t he a bu nd a nt recreation attractions of the coastal region that Bryan County offers access to, Fort McCallister Historic Park, the home of the best preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy is located here, on the south bank of the Ogeechee River. The sand and mud earthworks were attacked seven times by “Union ironclads” but failed to capture it until 1864, when Gen. William T. Sherman’s troops took it en route in their march to the sea. The 1,724-acre park offers Bryan County’s Future Planning will continue to move forward in step with the Comprehensive Coastal Plan, and county officials have great confidence in the state’s unified approach to planning for the region.
