Georgia County Government - March 2008 - (Page 21) development pressure, but Br ya n County officials are confident they can keep the rural character of Pembroke pretty much intact with the potential i nt roduc t ion of i mpac t fees a nd continued stringent zoning regulations that veer toward larger lots for singlefamily dwellings in more rural areas of the jurisdiction. The county currently has a citizens committee studying the feasibility of impact fees for the near future. “We visited Cherokee County and Newton Count y, metro counties that have implemented impact fees, for guidance,” County Administrator Jones says. “We will make some decisions about this on the near horizon.” Growth also has spurred the county to add a full-time county engineer to deal with zoning and subdivision issues, and Jones is in the process of hiring a full-time finance director to accommodate expanding financial operations. Economic prospects should cont i nue st rong, w it h t he u rba n epicenter of the region, Savannah, boosting the community via its own economic engines. Bryan County and surrounding counties also will benefit from new interchanges planned for the north/south interstate I-95, which will remain a key corridor for the entire region, supporting tourism, which will also remain vital. The transportation links between the ports and I-95 will also be increasingly critical to economic wellbeing, and emergency evacuation, in Bryan County and the region. Chairman Burnsed sees the county as “offering something for every economic group,” and he’s proud of that. Another trend he also sees continuing, especially in and around Richmond Hill, is that real estate values will continue to escalate, ma k ing property ta xes something of a perpetual challenge, which the county has already brainstormed with numerous exemptions. A ll in a ll, t he count y’s diverse housing profile, growing economy and attraction for increasing residents will pose challenges that call for adherence to the dynamic planning initiatives i n pl ac e , u nder s c ore d by Br y a n County’s leaders’ allegiance to the Comprehensive Coastal Plan. Bryan County has done its job ahead of time, creating a vibrant community that can meet growth demands while planning to retain a high quality of life, at a reasonable cost, in a truly spectacular ■ coastal setting. 363841_Stevenson.indd 1 1/31/08 8:19:24 AM 365063_NorthBryan.indd 1 1/21/08 9:23:44 AM 357101_Precision.indd 1 MARCH 2008 www.accg.org 11/19/07 21 3:54:02 PM http://www.speng.com http://www.bryancounty.org http://www.accg.org
