Georgia County Government - March 2008 - (Page 6) Plugged in to Cooperation Allow us to shed some light on our history. To avoid high wholesale costs during the 1970s energy crisis, Georgia’s Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) formed a new power generation and transmission company to provide electricity to customers at lower rates. The cooperatives’ electric transmission arm became Georgia Transmission. At Georgia Transmission, we build and maintain high-voltage power lines and substations for electric co-ops that provide power to approximately four million people. And we work with Georgia’s other utilities to plan and operate our electric grid. Today, Georgians benefit from one of the most efficient and reliable electric transmission grids in the nation. That’s the power of cooperation.
