Griffin Master of Public Administration (MPA) Scholarship Program Recipients Named R ecog ni zi ng a need to promote a mong Georg ia’s youth an abiding interest in government or civic ca reers, t he Associat ion Count y Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) established the ACCG Foundation, with the aim of fostering educational outreach in civics education. Conducted under the auspices of ACCG’s Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS), the foundation is also designed to support deserving college students who have decided to concentrate in the field of public administration while attending graduate school at the University of Georgia (UGA). Out of this goal, in the spring of 2007, ACCG announced the availably of the Jerry R. Griffin Master of Public Administration Scholarship. The scholarship, named in honor of ACCG Executive Director Jerry R. Griffin in recognition of his long and influential career with ACCG, pays $1,000 to an outstanding MPA student who is committed to a career in government management. A selection committee from within ACCG makes final decisions regarding scholarship recipients. ACCG bestowed the foundation’s fi rst two scholarship awards to University of Georgia MPA candidates Bernice Butler and Andrew Curtright. At the Winter ACCG Board of Managers meeting, Candice Jackson and Kimberly Larson were announced as the recipients of the Jerry R. Griffin Master of Public Administration Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year. Each student received a scholarship check in the amount of $1,000. A resident of Scottdale, in DeKalb County, Jackson is pursuing a Master’s of Public Administration degree from UGA and anticipates graduating in May 2009. Jackson received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Marketing from Howard University and currently serves as a research assisCandice Jackson tant in the DeKalb County Office of Process Improvement. She is also membership coordinator for the Georgia Center for Nonprofits. Jackson previously held an internship with the Southern Education Foundation and served as an analyst in the Community and Multicultural Lending division of Fannie Mae. She is a member of the Atlanta Young Professionals Urban League and is a two-time recipient of the Fannie Mae “Cool Reward for Hot Performers” award. Athens-Clarke County resident Kimberly Larson graduated in December 2008 from UGA with a Master’s of Public Administration degree and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UGA. Larson currently serves as an intern in the Suwannee City Manager’s office in Gwinnett County. Previously, she held internKimberly Larson ships with the City of Commerce Downtown Development Authority, the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Governor’s Intern Program. She is a member of the International City/County Management Association, a member of the Georgia Students for Public Administration and a lifetime 4-H member.
