Georgia County Government - March 2009 - (Page 25) ResearchCorner How to Better Navigate the State’s Online Resources hen conducting research, efficiency is a much desired component. Nothing can slow down a researcher faster than having to navigate through countless Web sites in order to figure out which entity controls what program or conducting multiple searches in order to find the right Web address or the right part of the Web site to begin your research. It would be much more convenient if all the information you needed was housed in one place. Fortunately, when it comes to information regarding Georgia government, there is a one-stop shop. Georgia.gov was developed to provide easy online access to Georgia government. The site contains links to more than 100 state agencies and 300 online services. This site is constantly updated and provides federal, state, local and regional government information. It offers a litany of topics with drop-down menus, a list of online services, state maps, media outlets, a features section, and even provides the daily winning lotto numbers. Need to help a constituent find a government form? It’s on there. Want to fi nd the latest agency or elected official’s press release? No problem. Can’t fi nd the link to watch the debates on the floor of the General Assembly? This site has it. It also saves you time by providing searchable topics instead of requiring you to go to each individual state agency’s Web site. For example, if you needed an update of the major road projects in the state, you wouldn’t have to go to the Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) Web site and search to fi nd the right link. You could simply scroll over the Transportation tab, choose Roads and Highways from the drop down menu and, bingo, there’s an option for Major Road Construction Projects. Now, you may be very familiar with the GDOT’s Web site, have it bookmarked, and know where every link is located. If so, that’s great, but can you say that for every agency? Th is site does not require you to know what every agency does, but simply the subject matter that you need to fi nd. This function in and of itself is a great time saver. Not only does georgia.gov provide state government information, but it also provides federal and local government information. The site has a link to the www.usa.gov site, which gives the same type of information that georgia.gov offers for the state, but for federal agencies and programs. General information on each county and region is also featured on the georgia.gov Web site and can be accessed through individual region and county links or maps. The georgia.gov Web site is a great resource for anyone who needs to fi nd information about government on any level in Georgia. For more information on what is offered through the site, visit georgia.gov. ■ W By Michele NeSmith Research and Policy Development Director The georgia.gov Web site is a great resource for anyone who needs to find information about government on any level in Georgia.
