Georgia County Government - March 2009 - (Page 29) TIFT Volunteer Roundtable on Economic Development is Authorized The Tift County Board of Commissioners in recent weeks passed a joint resolution in support of a volunteer-staffed economic roundtable to help guide the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce in economic development for the future. Former Chamber of Commerce Chairman Greg Sowell presented the proposal, saying the resolution would be a “show of support” for volunteers to bring recommendations on economic development, as well as to assist with developing a “focus and vision for economic growth” that includes actions, accountability and standards. The group’s function will be solely to make recommendations, Sowell pointed out. It will have no money or official authority. The Economic Roundtable is perceived as more of an outreach to the community, Sowell observed. “The community wants to work together and assist, but most folks won’t come forward with ideas or help if they aren’t asked.” The roundtable will enable the public to assist the county with the “burden of economic development,” and at the same time give the public a role in developing a coordinated community strategy that includes “goals, priorities and actions to measure progress and success.” The group will operate through the end of this year, and provide the commission with an annual review and evaluation of economic development efforts, as well as quarterly reports. ■ Touching Georgia Every Day You don’t have to look far for ways Burns & McDonnell touches life in Georgia.
