Counties present received plaques for being named winners of the 2008 County Excellence Awards, a joint recognition program of ACCG and Georgia Trend magazine. Here, DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones accepts the plaque in recognition of the DeKalb County Renewable/Green Energy facility from ACCG Executive Director Jerry Griffin. The facility, a 3.2 megawatt Green Power Project utilizing landfill gas as an energy source, the first source in the state to provide power to Georgia Power Company’s Green Energy Program. Lumpkin County was another County Excellence Award winner for the county’s successful financial program, leading to a major turnaround in the county’s financial position, including an A-1 Bond rating, the highest rating in Georgia for a county with fewer than 27,000 residents. Carol Granger of Cobb County Garners 2008 COUNTY CLERK OF THE YEAR AWARD Winner of the Georgia County Clerk of the Year award last year, Turner County Clerk Mary Winn, presented the Georgia 2008 County Clerk of the Year Award to Cobb County’s Carol D. Granger. The award was presented at the ACCG Annual Meeting Awards Breakfast, April 29 in Savannah. “This is the most important day of my career,” Granger told the group. “I thank my chairman, Sam Olens, my county manager, David Hankerson, and all the Cobb County commissioners for their exceptional support. I hope to continue helping make Cobb County government the best it can be.” Granger, a Certified County Clerk and Certified County Official, has served Cobb County as clerk for 17 years, and within the Association County Clerks of Georgia she has served as treasurer, vice president and president-elect. “She is credited with improving Internet usage in her county, is a community activist serving on her local National Cancer Society board, and is respected by all her colleagues for the professionalism she consistently brings to the profession of county clerk. We all congratulate her,” Winn said. County Clerk of the Year is Carol Granger of Cobb County. Granger accepted the award from last year’s clerk of the year, Mary Winn of Turner County.
