Georgia County Government - May/June 2008 - (Page 18) 2008 ACCG ANNUAL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS 2008 ANNUAL MEETING The ACCG 2008 Annual Meeting brought hundreds of county officials together for a busy 3 1/2 days of training, continuing education seminars, policy issue forums, planning and growth strategy meetings, panel discussions on special topics, legislative session wrap-ups, updates on state and federal programs affecting local governments and much more. Of numerous special guest speakers, the meeting hosted Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Rep. John Barrow, Georgia Public Service Commissioner Stan Wise, and Lt. General Russel Honore, the retired U.S. Army commander in charge of military assistance in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. On hand, too, were Dr. Steve Wrigley, director of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, who presided over Tuesday, April 29’s, ACCG Training Programs graduation ceremony for commissioners having completed the Certified County Official Program, ACCG Academy for Leadership or Certified Commissioners’ Advanced Program, assisted as always by Local Government Programs Coordinator Gordon Maner and Kitty Schollenberger, both of the Vinson Institute. A reception on Sunday evening was hosted by Chairman Eldrin Bell and Clayton County government in honor of new ACCG President Virginia Gray. The ACCG staff is shown at the event. U.S. Sen. New first vice president of ACCG, Bulloch County Vice Chairman Jan Tankersley, with Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, who spoke to commissioners about all-important election procedures in the coming season. U.S. Army Lt. General Russel Honore (Ret.), the Keynote speaker for Sunday’s opening general session, poses here with members of the Chatham County Youth Commissioners. Lt. General Honore was credited with restoring order in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and spoke on the necessity for local governments to take the lead in developing a “culture of preparedness” for natural and man-made disaster response. 18 GEORGIA COUNTY GOVERNMENT
