FEMA Formally Approves GEMA’s State Hazard Mitigation Strategy he Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has notified the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) of its formal approval of the Georgia Hazard Mitigation Strategy (GHMS). The GHMS identifies the risks and vulnerabilities of the state to multiple hazards and identifies goals, objectives and actions to address those risks and vulnerabilities. It also provides a comprehensive framework for statewide disaster mitigation actions. Mitigation is defined as any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from hazards. The purpose of mitigation is to protect people and property, and to minimize the costs of disaster response and recovery. The GHMS is reviewed and updated for gubernatorial and federal approval at least once every three years. “FEMA’s approval of the Georgia Hazard Mitigation Strategy enables the state of Georgia, its counties and local communities to maintain eligibility for the full range of disaster assistance available under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act,” said GEMA Director Charley English. Millions of dollars are spent annually for disaster response and recovery. GHMS will serve as a guide for state and local decision makers in their commitment of resources to help reduce the effects of natural hazards. The GHMS will be reviewed and revised as needed to reflect changes in development, progress in statewide mitigation efforts, and changes in funding priorities.
