WEBSTER County Becomes Smallest in Georgia to Unify Governments Earlier this year, Webster County and its municipalities held a special election to vote on consolidating all local governments, including the city of Preston, the town of Weston and the county. The only dissenting city, Weston, subsequently held a town hall meeting at the behest of the mayor, at which about 65 percent of the city’s residents signed a petition requesting legislation to rescind the town’s charter, effective Jan. 1, 2009, making way for the unification of Webster County’s county and municipal governments. When the Legislature approves the consolidation, the unified government will become the state’s smallest local government consolidation. Said County Chairman Dave Wills, the consolidation will allow the county and its cities to promote efficiency in terms of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax-funded improvements countywide, as well as improve service delivery for the benefit of all citizens of the county. He is also pleased that Weston will be included in the new jurisdiction of the Unified Government ■ of Webster County. qPublic –GET HOOKED TODAY!
