Georgia County Government - July 2008 - (Page 13) ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT continued from page 11 Governor Sonny Perdue, on hand for the plant’s announcement in Treutlen County, proclaimed Georgia the “Bioenergy Corridor of the Nation.” Range Fuels officials are enthusiastic. “The state of Georgia has provided us with an excellent opportunity to locate our first plant using its abundant, renewable and sustainable forest refuse as feedstock. Our technology transforms the wood waste from Georgia’s millions of acres of woodlands into ethanol, a key source of transport fuel,” said Mitch Mandich, CEO of Range Fuels. “Range Fuels’ focus on green, renewable energy will ultimately reduce greenhouse gases, promote energy independence, and create new jobs.” Dublin’s Heritage Square depicts the unique charm of the towns in the “heart of Middle Georgia” region Laurens County occupies. Gillis Legacy Still Felt Gillis is a name that is synonymous with the area’s agricultural industry and public service leadership, and the legacy of former Treutlen County Commissioner James Gillis, Jr., is still deeply felt in the community of Soperton. A state senator from 1945-46, and a county commissioner for 40 years until 2001, Gillis also served in many leadership capacities with Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), including as association president in 1969. Gillis served as the chairman of the board for the Georgia Forestry Commission, from 1971 through 2000. He was also president of the American Turpentine Farmers Association. The longtime Treutlen County commissioner is also chairman of the board of the Bank of Soperton and a past president of the Georgia Bankers Association. His brother, Sen. Hugh Gillis, established a record as the longest-serving legislator in the United States. Hugh was a state representative from 1941 to 1953, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT continued on page 15 Providing quality medical services to Georgia Counties 299 Hwy. 87 Bypass North, Cochran, GA 31014 Ph.: 478-934-1133 • FAX: 478-934-0730 W.J.
