Georgia County Government - July 2008 - (Page 19) are proud of the brand new state park planned, Balls Ferry State Park, which will be located on the Oconee River, and will incorporate land from Wilkinson, Johnson, Laurens and Washington counties. The Department of Natural Resources also operates the popular Little Ocmulgee State Park in Wheeler County, which offers outstanding 18-hole golfing on one of the finest golf courses of its size in the state. The park also has a popular lodge, which accommodates many regional and state meetings. Another local recreation plus is the Hugh Gillis Public fishing Lake, impounded six years ago, and overseen by the Waycross office of the Department of Natural Resources. There are several Oconee River landings in Laurens County, six of which are public, Mullis says. These offer the public abundant recreation including fishing and boating. The public can park campers and trailers at these landings and utilize water and electricity hookups provided. Little Ocmulgee State Park in Wheeler County features one of the finest 18-hole golf courses in the state, as well as a popular lodge. Conclusion Altogether the “heart of Middle Georgia” region is making outstanding economic development progress, and garnering attention on a national scale in bio-fuel technology with the addition of the Range Fuels plant and the prospects swift ly coming in from Laurens County’s intensive new marketing efforts. As efforts step up, more counties in the region will certainly succeed in their own efforts to recruit businesses that could benefit from locating in this quiet, yet economically advantageous, recreation-abundant region. So far, only Laurens County is seeing an influx of new residents moving in, but the whole region could be seeing strong growth as ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT continued on page 20 Building Relationships / Delivering Solutions NOVA’s services include: Since 1996, NOVA has been providing consulting needs to the Public Sector throughout the Southeast United States, including: GSFIC Department of Natural Resources Georgia Board of Regents Department of Technical & Adult Education Georgia Department of Transportation Environmental Consulting Geotechnical Engineering Construction Materials Testing and Inspection Services (including Florida Threshold Inspections) Property Condition Assessments Roof Consulting Pavement Testing and Consulting Code Compliance Municipal Support/ Outsourcing Private Provider Services™ Your Future Starts Here… Corporate Headquarters: 3640 Kennesaw North Industrial Parkway, Suite E Kennesaw, GA 30144 770.425.0777 / (fax) 770.425.1113 Additional Office Locations: Buford, GA Charlotte, NC Ft.
