Georgia County Government - July 2008 - (Page 37) Using a planning toolkit, they will state the problem, propose solutions, set clear objectives and develop a timeline for program implementation. The Summit culminates with county teams presenting their plans to resource specialists in town-hall-style meetings. Participants are then challenged to take what they have learned to their communities and engage peers and community partners. County teams will have the opportunity to apply for mini-grants provided by the GRDC to help get their projects started. While participation in the Georgia Youth Summit may sound like a lot of hard work, all facets of the Summit are designed with youths in mind. Workshops will utilize fun, hands-on activities that get youths thinking and keep them engaged. In addition to workshops and team-building activities, there will be music, dancing, socializing and other fun activities. A planning committee composed of youths and adults from a variety of organizations are putting this event together, and fun is high on the list of priorities. The original Georgia Youth Summit, held in 2001, was a collaboration between Georgia 4-H and the UGA J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership. Subsequent summits were held in 2003 and 2006 (the 2005 Biennial Summit was postponed in light of Rock Eagle 4-H Center serving as a Hurricane Katrina evacuation center). The fourth biennial Georgia Youth Summit is sure to be the best one yet. ACCG staff member Kathleen Bowen, special projects coordinator and GCAPS program coordinator, is a member of the 2008 Summit Planning Committee. She brings to the committee a wealth of skills and knowledge that will help county teams connect with their county governments and become valuable contributors. Projects developed by previous Summit participants include community beautification projects, after-school tutoring programs for at-risk youth, health fairs and substance abuse prevention programs. Some have had an impact on as few as 11 citizens, while others have impacted more than 11,000. Whether or not projects have a major impact on the issues they are designed to address, Summit participants will return home better prepared to assume leadership positions in their communities. The ultimate goal of the Georgia Youth Summit is to prepare the next generation of Georgia’s leaders. Don’t let your county miss out on this amazing opportunity. While most county teams have already been selected, there may still be scholarships available for youths in your county. Interested adults may also be needed to serve as county team leaders for the weekend or as resource specialists on Sept. 21 or 22. ■ For More Information For information on your county’s Georgia Youth Summit Team, contact your local Cooperative Extension/4-H Office at (800) ASK-UGA1.
