ResearchCorner Train Me! very county employee is hired based upon the skill set he or she can bring to the position. However, for that employee to continue to perform well in their job, they will need additional training in order to grow and develop new skills. Studies show that employees who are given additional training perform better in their jobs, which leads to higher levels of efficiency and fewer turnovers. A well-trained staff is an asset to the employers they serve and can help your county to provide a higher level of service to the public. Training opportunities are available throughout the year for a variety of county employees. Clerks, county attorneys, and managers and administrators each have their own trainBy Michele NeSmith ing opportunities every fall. These seminars, which are usually held over a two- or three-day Research and Policy period, provide information that is useful to both new and seasoned employees. For example, Development Director the City and County Attorney’s Institute provides sessions on new developments in local government law as well as in-depth presentations on current law. There is also additional benefit to training opportunities that focus on a particular group, such as clerks. Not only do they learn about new procedures and practices through the presentations they attend, but they also share information with their peers, which allows them to learn from each other. The relationships forged during these training opportunities allow employees to build a peer network upon which they can call when they need assistance with issues in their county. The state also provides many training opportunities for county employees. The Department of Revenue provides training sessions for assessors and appraisers, whereas Georgia Archives provides training on record management that can benefit both local and state level record managers. Other agencies and departments provide one-day seminars on topics that can be relevant County officials attend training during the ACCG 2008 Annual Meeting. for counties employees. Training does not always have to involve travel and money. Today’s technology allows for some seminars to be made available through Webcasts, whereas other seminars are off ered on a regional basis. Many groups also offer “lunch and learn” sessions, which provide valuable information over a short time period. Grants can also be applied for to attend certain national conferences as well. Investing in your employees now can lead to dividends in the future. A well-trained employee can save you money in the long run by being better equipped to handle certain issues such as completing open records requests in a timely manner or properly managing the type of projects that can be used with of SPLOST funds.
