Georgia County Government-August 2008 - (Page 32) EXTENSION continued from page 31 Before moving into their new facility, the Houston County Extension office was in an old state patrol building. “That building had frankly been used up,” Bledsoe said. She put tables under falling ceiling tiles so people couldn’t stand in the way of danger. “We had adequate meeting space there, but no real place to meet oneon-one with clients,” she said. “In our new offices, we can have a 4-H event, an agriculture event and a video conference all going on at the same time.” Many of these upgrades have also helped the Extension office create improved handicap access to their facilities. After being moved around five times in 10 years, the Greene County Extension office has a new, permanent home. They now have ample office and meeting space, work rooms and a large conference area. Adjacent to their office building is a new, covered livestock arena. The conference space and arena are proving to be revenue generators for the county. “The sky’s the limit if it’s promoted right,” said Peyton Sapp, county Extension coordinator. Another benefit offices around the state are seeing is the move toward consolidating county agencies into one building. In Houston County, Extension is combined in one facility with the Farm Service Agency and Soil and Water Conservation. “This sort of consolidation has created a one-stop shop for farmers,” Tyson said. “It also has created a common gathering place for the citizens of the county. It’s sort of like the old town hall gathering place where people can meet, discuss issues and connect to their community.” 385944_Southeast.indd 1 6/10/08 9:55:45 AM ROADS * BRIDGES * CULVERTS * SITE WORK ASPHALT PAVING * ASPHALT SALES * PARKING LOTS COMMERCIAL * INDUSTRIAL * MUNICIPAL P.O.
