By Deborah Dewberry, Editor C 12 obb County, carved from Cherokee County in 1832, originally part of the Cherokee Indian Nation, was the 81st count y in Georgia. Named for Judge Thomas Willis Cobb of Virginia, a U.S. senator, state congressman and Superior Court judge, it was for his wife that the county seat, “Marietta” was named. Pummeled by Gen. Maj. William T. Sherman’s troops in 1864, the city, much like Atlanta due south, rose from veritable ashes to become a thriving metropolis in its own right, today anchoring a jurisdiction of some 675,000 people – more than reside in a handful of northwestern U.S. states. Cobb County and Marietta are rich in history, encompassing four National Historic Districts listed on the National Register, including the 23-acre National Cemetery, where more than 17,000 officers and soldiers from every U.S. war lie buried. Civil War history is prominent here, as capturing Marietta was a key element the Civil War’s 1864 Atlanta Campaign. The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was a clash between the Confederacy and a GEORGIA COUNTY GOVERNMENT two-pronged assault wage by Gen. This keystone industry and the military base which has ry base, now weathered the federal government’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) downsizing initiative, spurred the jurisdiction’s initial residential growth, and in recent decades, Cobb has emerged to become one of the most progressive urban, and urbane, counties in the nation.
