Water Planning District, he is well attuned to the intricacies of watershed management and conservation. As previously mentioned, the county was among the first in the Southeast to retrofit all public buildings with watersaving low-f low plumbing fixtures, and Cobb was the first county, too, in Georgia to offer the public rebates for installing low-f low toilets during drought. Cobb County is now strategizing to serve the county’s drinking water needs through the next 50 years, “providing nature does her part,” Olens says, and the drought cycle closes, giving reservoirs a chance to replenish. Wastewater operations here also are milestones in the metro region, and in the nation. The Chattahoochee Tunnel, a world-scale civil engineering feat that at the time it was finished, four years ago, was the largest underground wastewater tunnel of its kind in the nation, will soon be accompanied by the South Cobb Tunnel, for which engineering design was completed during 2007’s first quarter. Construction begins this year on six miles of the 27-foot diameter hard rock tunnel, to convey wastewater in South Cobb. Slated to be completed in 2013, the South Cobb Tunnel will be three times the size and cost of the Chattahoochee Tunnel and furnish adequate wastewater capacity for 50 years, Olens notes. Recreation – Abundant and Growing Cobb County is the site of abundant family recreation opportunities provided by the county and also several popular recreational destinations operated by the private sector. With more than 43 parks, recreation centers and other related facilities, the county’s park system is one of the largest in the state. There are also 8,800 acres of federally owned park lands in Cobb County including Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. The Silver Comet Trail begins in Cobb, and another top privately run recreation attraction, White Water Park, is also here. The combination has led the familyoriented attractions to generate tourism dollars here on an exceptional scale, The Silver Comet Trail begins in Cobb County. and as a result, not surprisingly, Cobb County is the second most popular visitor destination in Georgia.
