Georgia County Government - September 2008 - (Page 29) Fun Fest begins with a 5-K run to benefit Cobb County kids for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Runners and residents alike enjoy games, displays and interact with county employees and learn more about the county. The Future Asked what he perceives as the biggest challenges for counties as the 21st century gets under way, Olens said he believes that how the state and local governments manage the “big three” – the transportation crisis, water management and trauma care access to all Georgians – could “make or break” the state’s economic engine. “Businesses can start leaving if we do not solve these issues satisfactorily,” Olens points out. “In many parts of the state, it’s already happening.” However, he expresses much hope. “Our current governor, Sonny Perdue, was a county planning commissioner in Houston County. He understands many of these challenges and provides some balance to the discussions. He has often assured local governments, moreover, that we would not take too much of a ‘hit’ when it comes to costly solutions to things, particularly, the transportation crisis.” COBB COUNTY continued on page 30 Allstar Lighting & Electrical Services, Inc.
