Georgia County Government - September 2008 - (Page 46) StaffNews Stewart Accepts Six-Month Assignment in Iraq M “I believe that my experience in managing local governments directly and advising local governments in my work at ACCG gives me the background and experience to help in this process.” – Mike Stewart, ACCG assistant director for County Services i ke Stewa r t, Associat ion Cou nt y Commissioners of Georgia’s (ACCG) assistant director for County Services, recently accepted a six-month assignment as a city management advisor in the Diyala Province in Iraq under contract with the U.S. Department of State. Stewart will join a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) comprised of civilian experts who will complement military units in their mission to transition Iraq to self-reliance. During the assignment, Stewart’s duties will include advising the PRT leader on a development plan to build the local Iraqi government’s ability to maintain and improve essential services as well as working with local Iraqi officials. “I look forward to this opportunity to serve and make a contribution to the efforts as put forth by the State Department, especially in terms of accelerating the capability of Iraqis to become self-reliant as they manage their new government.” Stewart continues, “I believe that my experience in managing local governments directly and advising local governments in my work at ACCG gives me the background and experience to help in this process. “The American military has done its job of helping Iraqis remove the totalitarian government, and now they need help in putting the systems that provides for a society in place. That is an area in which I feel I can contribute. I appreciate the opportunity that the leadership of ACCG is giving me to play a role in this important effort. I understand there is a great deal of positive work going on in the province at this time, including development of infrastructure and local government capacity building, and I really look forward to the chance to work with a great team.” ACCG Executive Director Jerry Griffin added: “While we all hate to lose the expertise and experience Mike brings to his work at ACCG even for a short period, the opportunity for us to share Mike with a local government moving to establish the core governmental role of providing infrastructure and services to sustain a free society brings great pride to our organization.” Stewart has more than 30 years of professional local government executive experience, including 10 years with ACCG. Prior to his appointment as ACCG’s director of Financial Services, Stewart served as Lowndes County manager and had also served as manager in Liberty County and in Ware County.
