SANDERS, Greene County Pension Representative H. JAY WALKER, Houston County SEPTEMBER 2008 www.accg.org ach yea r w it hin Associat ion Cou nt y Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), the policy deliberations that get under way through our six standing policy committees represent our association’s first formal steps toward formulating counties’ legislative goals, which commissioners will again take before the next Georgia General Assembly, presented concisely in the 2009 County Platform. The consensus-building policy process ACCG adheres to allows for the presentation of information concerning many sides of key public policy issues, which are thoroughly debated, with free input from all participants. As the deliberations come to a close in the early fall, county officials statewide gather at the Fall Policy Conference, which convenes this year Oct. 8-11 at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta. Th is pivotal conference culminates as commissioners cast votes to approve the recommendations clearly stated in the County Platform. The document presents the consensus of all 159 Georgia counties, giving them one voice with respect to crucial legislative goals, as well as legislative defensive issues. As the summer ends, I can report that ACCG’s policy committees have made progress clarifying the major issues with which counties will be concerned in 2009. As pointed out in the last issue of Georgia County Government, the “big issues” from the 2008 session are still largely with us, including proposals to cut the property tax and the need to comprehensively address Georgia’s transportation crisis, the need for statewide trauma care access and water. Georgia is not in a state of crisis economically, like PRESIDENT continued on page 8 The ‘big issues’ from the 2008 session are still largely with us, including proposals to cut the property tax and the need to comprehensively address Georgia’s transportation crisis. 7 http://www.accg.org
