The county also hired a part-time appraiser and assigned administrator duties to County Clerk Brenda Stalvey. Another CDGB of $493,412 in fall of 2007 was used to pave a major subdivision road. A $10,000 DCA grant was also procured to buy a Jaws of Life unit for the county fire department. Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds bought the county two new fire trucks, with the assistance of the Georgia Forestry Commission and the county also became an active member of the South Georgia Regional Joint Development Authority and implemented its Q-public Web site. The year 2007 also saw Echols County obtain a full-time county extension agent, implement a timber ordinance, remodel the county community center, and perform major renovations at the county courthouse. In mid-2008, the county’s courtroom has been remodeled, two additional fire stations have been built and the county replaced a dilapidated building with a new, 40-foot-by-30-foot building to be utilized by the Sheriff ’s Department for vehicle maintenance. Echols County commissioners also implemented a drug testing policy, launched the first county government Web site and celebrated the “perfect timing” of the county’s status of a consolidated government, in time for the 150th anniversary of the county’s founding, which will be celebrated with a community festival, Dec. 13, 2008.
