The county sheriff ’s office received a $130,000 technology grant from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), which will place 32 laptop computers in county squad cars and allow for access to many new resources. Public Works Department projects included contracting with the Georgia Department of Corrections for an inmate labor crew, which, in conjunction with the county’s public works department, has picked up some 20 tons of litter from county roads. The county Road Department completed more than 42 miles of resurfacing projects over the last three years, totaling more than $2.2 million since Chairman Thompson has been in office, Carter asserts. The county has also built and paved 11 miles of dirt roads, and saved some $268,000 per mile on these projects by utilizing in-house road building crews.
